George RR Martin is an American novelist and short story writer, a screenwriter, and television producer who is most known for his international, best selling series of epic fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire. This series was made into a HBO television series Game of Thrones that attracts a record number of viewers with a powerful international fan base. George’s impact is so great in 2011 he was named one of Time’s Most Influential People of the Year.
A Song of Ice and Fire is a series of epic fantasy novels by George R. R. Martin. The series will span seven volumes all together. A Song of Ice and Fire takes place on the continent of Westeros and Essos which each chapter from a character's point of view.
The three main storylines interweave a dynastic war among several families who are fighting for the Iron Throne and control over Westeros. The main stories revolve around the rising threat of the supernatural Others beyond The Wall in Westeros’ north, the exiled daughter of the previous king, Daenerys Targaryen, and the other rich families in Westeros who are fighting for the Iron Throne.
A Song of Ice and Fire had sold more than 60 million copies worldwide, has been translated into at least 45 languages, and has inspired a comic book adaption, a TV series, prequel novellas, and card and board games.
George started his career writing fantasy novels, eventually moving on to television after a failure of a fourth book, The Armageddon Rag. He spent many years in television writing and producing, eventually coming back to fantasy fiction, starting a novel that would eventually be the first novel in A Song of Ice and Fire, his bestselling series. In 2005, the fourth novel in the series, A Feast for Crows, became The New York Times No. 1 Bestseller and The Wall Street Journal No. 1 Bestseller while being nominated for a Quill Award and British Fantasy Award. His writing has been described as “fantasy for grown ups” but his penchant for killing off important characters has been both praised and criticised.
George R. R. Martin has laughed a high-profile campaign to raise funds for Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary and the Food Depot of Santa Fe. Those who donated $20,000 or more to the campaign would have a character named after them and killed in the A Song of Ice and Fire novels. He raised $502,549 in total.
